GLS Spring Semester 2008

l The Spring Semester will start Monday, January 28.   The course listing is now shown for the Spring Semester .  You can now enrol by submitting a Spring Registration Form.

l People enroll in these courses because they require some knowledge of German for business or travel, to communicate with German-speaking friends and relatives, to read German language publications, to listen to German-speaking radio on shortwave and the Internet, to watch German language television on the Internet and to access the tremendous amount of Internet information available in German. Some use it to prepare to attend a college or university in a German-speaking country. Some simply do it to enjoy the language learning experience. Let's face it, you will have one heck of a lot more fun in Switzerland, Austria and Germany if you have some language background. You can check out some of the German-oriented links by clicking on them in NAVIGATION below.

ADULT CLASSES

The school accepts beginners with no knowledge of German, those with limited abilities, and those at advanced levels. Classes are conducted using German textbooks, in an informal, speech-intensive manner, emphasizing German conversation, traditions and culture.

Our students find that learning German is fun. It creates social and business opportunities, and makes foreign travel more enjoyable.

TEACHERS

Our teachers have had extensive language training in German speaking countries and the United States. They have taught in public schools, universities, other German Saturday schools and language schools.

STAMMTISCH

Stammtisch Friends

Teachers, students of all levels, members and guests meet weekly on Wednesdays at a local restaurant to practice and enhance their language skills. Starts at 9.00 PM Wednesdays. Join with us for an informal meeting where German is spoken while you enjoy food and drink of your choice. Bring a friend. There is no entry fee and you don't have to be a GLS student or member. This is a program which reaches out to the German speaking and German learning community. If your German is rusty, here is an opportunity to exercise it. If you are fluent you can help a beginner. If you are taking German in High School this will increase your momentum. If you can't think of German words, fill in the spaces mit englisch. Please e-mail us and ask to enrol on our Stammtisch announcement list to get weekly Stammtisch announcements.

German Language School Background Information

The German Language School is sponsored by the N.H. Germanic Association, a non-profit corporation whose purpose is to teach and promote the German Language and culture. We offer to all the adventure of speaking the German Language and learning the customs of the countries where it is spoken.

The N.H. Germanic Association's Saturday School was founded in 1967 as a non-profit organization to offer pre-school and grade school children the opportunity to learn to speak, read and write the German language as well as to acquaint them with the culture of the German-speaking European countries. In later years the number of children enrolled decreased even as adult enrolment expanded. Now we offer only adult evening courses. We would need to enrol approximately 10 children to re-start the Saturday Children's School.

LATEST ON-LINE NEWS IN GERMAN

Advanced students and visitors may enjoy browsing through a large selection of German language newspapers and periodicals linked to our site. You will find newspapers (and much more) from Austria, Belgium, Germany, Liechtenstein and Switzerland. Click on Newspapers On-line .

GREAT LITERATURE IN GERMAN

Here you will be able to read or download the works of world-famous authors from Aesop to Zola. Aesop's Fables, Shakespeare and Charles Dickens Christmas Story (Ebenezer Scrooge) read very well auf deutsch. Shakespeare is performed more extensively in Germany than here because his works really spring to life in German. The collection of authors is very extensive and the site is very easy to navigate. It is truly a library of classics, probably one of the top literary sites in Germany.
