GLS Spring Semester  2010

School Director: Judell Schlachter

Email: judellschlachter@comcast.net

  • The Spring Semester is now in progress as follows:
    January 18.....Advanced Beginners...Postponed to January 25...snow!!
    January  27....Intermediate and Advanced
February  3.....Start date of New Beginners  class.
  •   You can still enrol by clicking on  How to  enroll .  The Advanced Class can accept enrolments throughout the semester because of the  less formal nature of the course. Tuition will be prorated accordingly.
  • People enroll in these courses because they require some knowledge of German for business or travel, to communicate with German-speaking friends and relatives, to read German language publications, to listen to German-speaking radio on shortwave and the Internet, to watch German language television on the Internet and to access the tremendous amount of Internet information available in German. Some use it to prepare to attend a college or university in a German-speaking country. Some simply do it to enjoy the language learning experience. Let's face it, you will have one heck of a lot more fun in Switzerland, Austria and Germany if you have some language background.

NH Germanic Association Endowment Fund Established
  • The Board of Directors has authorized the establishment of an Endowment Fund in order to improve the financial standing of the organization and provide an increasing degree of financial independence for its primary activity, The German Language School.
  • An initial gift of $3,000 was received for this purpose.  In addition, the donor  has made an offer to match all gifts to the NHGA Fund up to a total of $7000.
  • The NHGA operates as a 501(c)3 public charity, making all donations eligible as tax deductible gifts for Federal Income Tax purposes.   Donations can be made in cash or by transferring stock or other securities directly to the Fund.
  • Friends of the NHGA now have a way to significantly help our organization by making a tax-deductible gift.  Your gift, no matter how large or small, will be gratefully accepted and will be matched dollar-for-dollar until the $7000 is used up.  A wise donation strategy is to give stock which has appreciated significantly in value.  You will avoid the capital gains tax and can deduct the full market value.   Stock  or security gifts will also be matched until the $7000 is used up. Checks or transfers can be written to the:  NH Germanic Association  and can be sent to:

TUITION

ADULT CLASSES
  • The school accepts beginners with no knowledge of German, those with limited abilities, and those at advanced levels. Classes are conducted using German textbooks, in an informal, speech-intensive manner, emphasizing German conversation, traditions and culture.
  • Our students find that learning German is fun. It creates social and business opportunities, and makes foreign travel more enjoyable.
TEACHERS
  • Our teachers have had extensive language training in German speaking countries and the United States. They have taught in public schools, universities, other German Saturday schools and language schools.

STAMMTISCH
Stammtisch Friends

Teachers, students of all levels, members and guests meet weekly on Wednesdays at a local restaurant to practice and enhance their language skills. Starts at 9.00 PM Wednesdays. Join with us for an informal meeting where German is spoken while you enjoy food and drink of your choice. Bring a friend. There is no entry fee and you don't have to be a GLS student or member. This is a program which reaches out to the German speaking and German learning community. If your German is rusty, here is an opportunity to exercise it. If you are fluent you can help a beginner. If you are taking German in High School this will increase your momentum. If you can't think of German words, fill in the spaces mit englisch. Please e-mail us and ask to enrol on our Stammtisch announcement list to get weekly Stammtisch announcements.

German Language School Background Information

  • The German Language School is sponsored by the N.H. Germanic Association, a non-profit corporation whose purpose is to teach and promote the German Language and culture. We offer to all the adventure of speaking the German Language and learning the customs of the countries where it is spoken.
  • The N.H. Germanic Association's Saturday School was founded in 1967 as a non-profit organization to offer pre-school and grade school children the opportunity to learn to speak, read and write the German language as well as to acquaint them with the culture of the German-speaking European countries. In later years the number of children enrolled decreased even as adult enrolment expanded. Now we offer only adult evening courses. We would need to enrol approximately 10 children to re-start the Saturday Children's School.

GREAT LITERATURE IN GERMAN

Here you will be able to read or download the works of world-famous authors from Aesop to Zola. Aesop's Fables, Shakespeare and Charles Dickens Christmas Story (Ebenezer Scrooge) read very well auf deutsch. Shakespeare is performed more extensively in Germany than here because his works really spring to life in German. The collection of authors is very extensive and the site is very easy to navigate. It is truly a library of classics, probably one of the top literary sites in Germany.
